![]() ![]() Interestingly, the retention interval most frequently encountered by the British police has been reported as 1 month. The expectation is that memory accuracy will only decline from this level at forensically typical retention intervals. When this estimate is translated into a proportion correct measure of accuracy, one then has a reasonable estimate as to the maximum level of accuracy expected for the typical witness under the conditions prevailing in the experiment-or in more realistic situations, to the extent that conditions are the same as in the experiment in question. Given that there are theoretical forgetting functions that make relatively accurate predictions regarding the memory accuracy of the typical witness in a laboratory or field experiment, memory accuracy at any particular retention interval, it should not be surprising that one can “work backward” from the earliest tested retention interval to make a prediction as to what the original strength of the witness’s memory representation was. It turns out that when theoretical forgetting functions are fit to retention interval data from studies wherein three or more retention intervals were tested, theoretical functions that fit the data very well describe a forgetting function that is mathematically quite similar to that of Ebbinghaus. That is, the experts believe that the forgetting curve declines rapidly right after viewing of a perpetrator’s face and then levels off over time. Published surveys of the opinions of psychologists who qualify as experts in the science underlying the psychology of testimony have shown that more than 80% of them believe that the nature of the forgetting function for the human face follows the same form as that of the forgetting function first described by the early experimental psychologist, Hermann Ebbinghaus, and reproduced in introductory psychology texts. The trier of fact would like to know just how rapidly memory strength declines for an unfamiliar face. ![]() However, simply knowing that memory for unfamiliar faces is less accurate at longer retention intervals does not specify the time course of the forgetting function. Assessments of the average effect size for the retention interval (measured in standard score units) taken across all these published studies have revealed that, statistically speaking, one can safely conclude that memory traces of human faces encountered but once previously will be weaker at longer retention intervals than at briefer ones. Researchers interested in how memory for the human face is affected by the retention interval have conducted several dozen published studies wherein they have assessed memory accuracy after two or more different retention intervals. Let us first consider what is known about the nature of the forgetting function. Inasmuch as the trier of fact ordinarily has access to a relatively precise measure of the length of the retention interval, with both the time of the incident in question and the time of the memory test being well established, the problematic pieces of information are an estimate of the original strength of the witness’s representation of the perpetrator and knowledge of the course of the forgetting function during the retention interval. The forgetting function is the curve that describes the strength of the memory trace over the course of the retention interval. To increase the precision of the estimate, the trier of fact needs three pieces of information: An estimate of the original strength of the witness’s memory representation of the perpetrator’s face, the length of the retention interval, and the nature of the forgetting junction. Unless the trier of fact believes that human memory operates with the fidelity of a video camera, he or she will need to estimate the strength of the witness’s memory at the time of his or her memory being tested. When eyewitness testimony is provided, the trier of fact must decide whether the testimony is accurate. Testing of a witness’s memory for a perpetrator’s identity is obviously important whenever the prosecution seeks to prove that the perpetrator and the defendant are indeed the same person. Retention interval refers to the amount of time that elapses between the end of a witness’s encounter with a perpetrator and any subsequent testing of the witness’s memory for that encounter. ![]()

Parallels Access is the best remote access app that we’ve seen for iOS so far, and makes it much easier to remotely work with Mac and Windows programs on an iPad. Ultimately this is likely to deter many people from purchasing this app. Whilst it is the best remote access app we've tried on the iPad so far, the need to pay a separate subscription for each computer means that is more expensive than rivals such as LogMeIn which simply charges a one-off fee. The process of applification' gives Parallels Access an advantage over other remote access apps that are available for iOS devices. There's also an option to view the desktop of the remote computer if you need to locate particular files or folders. Other useful options include an App Switcher, similar to the Windows Taskbar or the Mac's Dock, which allows you to quickly switch between open programs, or between multiple open documents within a program. Tap and hold your finger anywhere on the screen for a couple of seconds and the familiar iPad magnifying glass will appear, providing a clearer view of toolbars and other options something that will come in particularly handy with the ribbon' interface in MS Office. If you do need to use specific tools or menu commands within a particular program then Parallels Access can make that easier too. This makes desktop programs such as Word and Excel feel more like native iOS apps, allowing you to create and edit documents far quicker. Select some text or a spreadsheet cell and you'll see the standard iOS selection menu appear, with commands such as Copy, Paste and Delete that you can quickly select with a tap of your finger. The menu commands and toolbar icons used in traditional desktop software can be fiddly and annoying to use on a tablet, so Parallels Access enables those programs to use many of the standard commands and tools that are unique to iOS. The applification' process doesn't stop there. You can then go ahead and control your Mac or PC programs with standard iPad gestures, such as a quick double-tap to select a word in a text document, or a triple-tap to select an entire paragraph There's also a small toolbar that sits on the right-hand side of the screen that contains a number of additional options, but which can be hidden out of sight with a quick flick of your finger. When you tap on a Mac or Windows program it is automatically launched into full-screen mode on the iPad, which means you can launch a program and get straight to work without ever seeing the desktop of your remote computer.Īn on-screen keyboard automatically appears when required, containing a full set of function and command keys, including platform-specific keys such as the Windows logo key or the Command key on a Mac. Parallels Access doesn't require a copy of Parallels Desktop to work properly, but owners of Parallels Desktop can add programs from their virtual machines to the App Launcher for quick access. You can edit this screen to just include your favourite Mac or Windows programs, and then launch any program with a quick tap. This is similar to the iPad's Home screen and contains icons for all the main programs installed on that computer. The key feature here is a process that Parallels refers to as applification', which modifies the interface of your desktop programs to make them look and behave like native iPad apps.Īs soon as you connect to your remote computer Parallels Access displays a screen called the App Launcher. ![]() Parallels Access switches its focus from the desktop to controlling individual programs. This wasn't ideal as neither the Mac OS nor the traditional Windows desktop were designed with touch-screen controls in mind. The original Parallels Mobile app simply provided remote access to the desktop of your Mac and left you to try and control it by tapping on the screen of your iPhone or iPad. There's also an option to lock your remote computer so that it can't be used by anyone else while you're out and about with your iPad. ![]() You can connect to your remote computer with a single tap, and for additional security you can further specify that remote access on the iPad requires the username and password for that computer too. One key part of their design is the extensive discussion questions, which are suggested to encourage Bible study members to participate and critically use their own minds to understand the text. The lessons are designed as a resource which can help teachers both understand and teach the text of Ephesians.
